Winter weather…

I gave a sneak peak a couple of weeks ago, when this project was all but finished, then wandered off and forgot to show you all the final results. Sorry!

I don’t know about where you are, but around here, we’ve had snow, after snow, after snow. So, I keep picking out the blue-gray palettes of the world right now, and find myself ending alot of emails “Stay warm!”

The scarf pattern is inspired by the (in my opinion) brilliant scarf print from Aneela Hoey’s Sherbert Pips

Lots of straightline quilting: In addition to intheditch rows, and more just outside the ditch along the body of the scarves, I used it to emphasize the fringe and to add extra stripes.

This is my second recent quilt all in solids – but the stripe-y binding and especially the rick-rack print backing make me happy. :)

modern quilted blue gray tablerunner

I think the table runner was a trial run; as I was sewing, I’ve been thinking of a version as a tree-skirt (or maybe just a small quilt), with snowball blocks, and green and white and ash.

In the mean time, I’ll be putting one of these in my shop

Finally Finished

I started this mini quilt over the summer (apparently without a blog post)… finished the top in August…  mentioned it again in September… and that was as far as I got.

Armed with an (early) New Year’s resolution to sew more for myself and less out of obligation, I got back to it and finished it this week.

Daydreaming quilt: green and yellow modern mini quilt in kona solids

I’m not sure why I waited so long: I love this little quilt. It’s based on City Fair, for City Quilts by Cherry House, and the sun on the birch leaves outside my old office window. (I’ve moved offices since, but that’s another post for another time). By my count, it’s has ten different Kona solids.  I thought about hand quilting the whole thing with perl cotton (I found a pretty, variegated one in just the right mix of greens and yellows), but it was too much, visually. Instead, I did a few accent rows among the machine cross-hatching.

This quilt spent the better part of a month on the design wall waiting for a decision about the border color. I finally decided on a leaf green border, and a soft yellow for the background. Both kona solids, to compliment the solids in the blocks.

quilt progress photo - improv quilt solid pastel colors and fussy cut trees

As you can see, it’s bordered, sandwiched, basted and well on it’s way to being finished. The quilting is bands of organic lines in the white sashing, and a square around each of the fussy-cuts.

I doubt I’m alone in this, but I’ve been thinking about solids alot lately. My “Daydreaming” quilt – inspired by City Quilts –  still needs to be quilted – but I’ve been doodling more solids quilt ideas on envelop backs and the like. And, then, look what landed in my mail box for my Fresh Modern Bee II – some gorgeous colors and some black and white dots.

And, did you know there’s a group on flickr that’s all solid quilts ? Here are a few inspiring examples:

I’m making a new mini for my office wall, inspired by City Fair, from City Quilts

But my colors aren’t inspired by the city, but the leafy birch tree outside my office window – so I’ve got warm yellows and bits of sky blues peaking through lots of fresh greens.

Here’s the whole layout – the top is all pieced, now I need to decide about quilting. I’m considering handquilting it — it’s small enough to do it, but I haven’t decided et. Suggestion?
