One of my (many, many) ideas I considered for my month of my bee was to make square in square blocks, destined for some sort of floating non-grid layout like Ashley’s (Film in the Fridge) Greenfield Hill Quilt I ended up going in a different direction for the bee – but here are some of the quilts I looked to for inspiration.

1. denyse schmidt greenfield hill quilt top, 2. animal sherbet squares quilt, 3. Squares Front, 4. Pink and Brown square quilt, 5. { bento box quilt }, 6. strawberries & champagne baby quilt, 7. This quilt spent the better part of a month on the design wall waiting for a decision about the border color. I finally decided on a leaf green border, and a soft yellow for the background. Both kona solids, to compliment the solids in the blocks.

As you can see, it’s bordered, sandwiched, basted and well on it’s way to being finished. The quilting is bands of organic lines in the white sashing, and a square around each of the fussy-cuts.

I finished this little runner a while ago – but just got around to photographing it this weekend.

And had a good time doing it, so pardon the photo-heavy post, if you’re bothered by such things.

The center fabric is “Sparkle all the Way”  – and I love how it blends a motif that’s Christmas-y, but not in your face about it, with a mod style and color scheme.

It’s a simple runner: Simple square in square blocks, paisley backing, striped binding, random straightline quilting.

A holiday weekend and an approaching deadline = quick progress on this quilt

patchwork quilt heather bailey nicey jane roses with pink gingham and green kona solid

It’s all quilted. Hot off the press — err, sewing machine, with a few basting pins still in place.

The quilting is simple – a combination of grid quilting, with a few diagonal/cross hatching lines to keep it interesting.

And, ivory is such an impractical choice for binding, but I love these little dots as the finishing touch.

Except for the Nicey Jane floral, this is all solids and super simple, classic prints: dots for the binding, stripes for the back and a tiny gingham in the top.

I’m busily working on my gift-making, but, when I’m done, this little top is waiting for me on the design wall.

modern patchwork quilt top - square in square with fussy cut centers - pink, orange, yellow, green and blue.

Thoughts on a border? I need a thin border (then probably some more white – because my quilts always “need” more white) – but I hadn’t decided which color before I had to stop working on this one.
